Disk Types

We transfer commonly used computer disk formats.

Three Half Inch Floppy Disc

3½” Floppy Disk Transfer Service

1981 ~ 2010

The 3½-inch Floppy Disk was introduced by SONY in 1981 as a smaller alternative to the 5¼-inch floppy disk. The format took off in 1984 with the introduction of the original Apple Macintosh. At first, the 3½-inch Floppy Disk held 720 K of data but this was later increased to 1.4 MB and 2.8 MB. It was replaced by the Zip drive and USB flash drive. SONY stopped manufacturing floppy disks in 2010.

1982 ~ Present

In 1982, Philips and Sony introduced the Compact Disc (CD) as a digital audio format. By the 90's CD-ROMS entered the market for games and software. The late 1990's brought us Recordable CD's (CD-R) which allowed the backup and transport of data. Similarly, DVDs began as a digital video format in the late 1990's and later developed a DVD-R format for data backup and data delivery.

Zip Disc Cartridge

iomega Zip disk Transfer Service

1995 ~ 2012

The Iomega Zip Disk was introduced in 1994 as a replacement for the 3½-inch Floppy Disk. This disk format became popular with media professionals and graphic artists because the disk held 100 MB of data - 75 times more than the floppy. The Zip Disk later increased its size to 250 MB and then 750 MB. By the mid 2000's the Zip Disk was eventually replaced by CD-R's and USB flash drive.

If some of the disks are important to you, we have software that might be able to restore and save the information.

At this time, we only transfer the data as-is from your disk. We do not convert files from one format to another format. It is something we plan to offer in the future but not at this time.

We do not transfer 5¼-inch floppy disks at this time. We might offer this service at a later date. Check back soon.

We have performed some minor disk repairs in the past but we do not offer disk repair services at this time. It might be a service we introduce in the future. Check back soon.

Saved my old hard drive

I had an old 4GB hard drive that I saved from the late 90's and had no way of getting the pictures and files off it. I called RVA Rewind and they were able to get the drive working and transfered all my old files to a brand new thumb drive.

CD-R transfer services

I spent many years back in the 2000's backing up photos and other documents onto CD-R discs. CD-R was the best technology at the time to do this. Now in 2022, it's impossible to buy a new computer with a DVD or CD drive. I needed to transfer my old photos and files to a thumb drive. RVA Rewind helped transfer my CD-R discs and everything worked out great!

Zip Disk Recovery

RVA Rewind helped save my old files. I had a bunch of old Zip Disks from my time as a art student at VCU. I had no way of getting the files off since they don't make Zip Disk drives anymore. I did a Google search to see if anyone in the area could help me. I found RVA Rewind in Richmond and contacted them. I mailed them my disks. They transfered my old files and provided me a download link. I've now got one less thing to worry about. Thanks!
