Data transfer FAQ

Can you convert old document files to newer formats?

Straight answer from RVA Rewind, a local media digitizing studio in Richmond, Virginia. We help with Common 3.5" floppies, Zip disks, CDs, DVDs, and other readable consumer data media we support (specialty formats vary).

At this time we focus on transferring data as-is from your disks (copying the files off readable media onto a modern USB drive or download). We do not routinely convert legacy document, spreadsheet, or specialty file formats into the newest application versions.

Once your files are off the old disk, you can open many of them on a modern computer or use conversion tools suited to that file type. Some older formats open fine; others need specialty software or a conversion workflow after recovery.

If you have a specific format in mind (old WordPerfect, Works, proprietary photo software, etc.), mention it when you contact us. We can tell you whether a simple transfer is enough or whether you will need a separate conversion step after the files are recovered.

Start with data disk transfer services, and list disk types plus any known file types when you request an estimate.

How this works at RVA Rewind

Old disks fail without warning, and drives for Zip and legacy formats are scarce. Moving readable files to a modern drive or cloud backup is often the only way to keep school work, photos, and business archives accessible.

  1. List the disk types and roughly how many you have.
  2. We attempt to read each disk and copy recoverable files as stored on the media.
  3. You receive the recovered files on modern media or download, plus your originals back.
