Data transfer FAQ
What if my floppy, Zip, CD, or DVD does not work?
Straight answer from RVA Rewind, a local media digitizing studio in Richmond, Virginia. We help with Common 3.5" floppies, Zip disks, CDs, DVDs, and other readable consumer data media we support (specialty formats vary).
If we have trouble reading one of your disks, we typically move on to the next item in your order so the rest of the project keeps progressing, then report what we found. That way one bad disk does not stall an entire box of media.
Some disks fail from age, mold, physical damage, or unknown formatting. We will attempt a careful read of supported types. Minor issues are sometimes workable; severely damaged or unreadable media may yield partial or no recovery. We do not promise miracles on every disk, and we communicate clearly when something will not read.
Best practice: do not force a noisy, sticky, or grinding disk in a home drive—stop and contact us. For important data, even partial recovery can be valuable.
List disk types and counts when you request an estimate. Browse data disk transfer services and FAQs on scratched disks and formats we support today.
How this works at RVA Rewind
Old disks fail without warning, and drives for Zip and legacy formats are scarce. Moving readable files to a modern drive or cloud backup is often the only way to keep school work, photos, and business archives accessible.
- List the disk types and roughly how many you have.
- We attempt to read each disk and copy recoverable files as stored on the media.
- You receive the recovered files on modern media or download, plus your originals back.
